Surroundings

What can you find in the hotel's leonardo surroundings?

Leonardo is located in the village of Corniolo, a hamlet of Santa Sofia, crossed by one of the many tributaries of the Bidente River branched in the Forlì-Apennines, a few kilometers from the border with Tuscany and close to what is considered one of the wildest areas of the park National Forests Casentinesi, Monte Falterona and Campigna.

Staying at Hotel Leonardo means experiencing the great privilege of getting in touch with a millennial forest area, one of the oldest and most valuable in Europe.
It is in Casentino's Democratic Forests that in 1959 the first Italian Integral Nature Reserve was born: that of Sasso Fratino. The immense natural value of this territory is witnessed by the extraordinary biodiversity of local flora and fauna, here there are over 1,300 intraspecific groups of vascular plants, the most widespread wolf population of the Northern Apennines and, exceptionally, five different species of Ungulates: deer, deer, deer, moufflon and wild boar.

SASSO FRATINO

A paradise of nearly 800 acres and a unicum of the world's natural heritage since 1959, the first integral Italian Reserve. The tormented morphology of the territory, excavated from deep rocks caused by the erosion of the marshes and the collapse of arenaic portions, has made human access extremely difficult since antiquity, protecting in fact one of the 10 old-growth forests (literally forests forests ) Older than the northern hemisphere.

Recent and in-depth research at the Dafne Department of the University of Tuscia and the State Forestry Corps has shown that giant beeches in this area can reach five hundred years of age, elevating its natural habitat to a complex and privileged subject of study for The functioning and conservation of ecosystems and biodiversity.
It is therefore perfectly understandable that the strictest and most complete environmental protection, fallen trees and organic matter are left to the action of the atmospheric agents and the ecosystem and can only be accessed by permission, usually granted for study purposes. It is forbidden and absolutely forbidden any human intervention to modify the complex and delicate balance of the environment.

The symbol of casentine forests is the black woodpecker, the largest species of peaks in Europe, known for its tendency to nest in plants that exceed the century and a half of life.

NOT ONLY NATURE

Along with the wild and unspoiled face of the immense wooded forests, well represented by the Sasso Fratino reserve, the Park includes areas where man and nature have always lived in close symbiosis.
The traces of this story are not only the many communities that stand on the edge of the woods, small and ancient villages abandoned in the Second World War and ruins of a time that was, but also great historical and religious leaders, among which we can not name the ' Hermitage of Camaldoli and the Verna Shrine.

EREMO DI CAMALDOLI

It was erected in the tenth century in the Tuscan province of Arezzo on the border with the Romagna side, the Hermitage of Camaldoli was, in the beginning, one of the many small Benedictine hermitic communities founded by San Romualdo. Immersed in the peace of beech and fir trees, the original five cells, devoted to the contemplative life of the friars, soon attracted pilgrims and travelers to whom San Romualdo decided to allocate the Fontebono or Foresteria Hospice, four kilometers away.
Over time, it became an important monastery and a center for the transcription of ancient codes, with an academy for the promotion of letters and sciences and frequented by humanists such as Marsilio Ficino, Lorenzo the Magnificent, Giovan Battista Alberti and Giuliano de 'Medici.
Therefore, a very important historical, cultural, artistic and religious center that contains a valuable archive of parchments and antique codes, rare books, works by Raffaello, Vasari, Carracci and Tintoretto.

The monks revealed from the very beginning, the most unique and rare case, a strong sensibility to environmental heritage, in obedience to the biblical principle of "guarding and cultivating".
Millions of years ago, the Camaldoli monks were the first Italian forestry code, the first paper geared towards sustainable forest exploitation, able to guarantee economic development through the trade of precious white spruce timber, firewood, chestnuts , Honey, officinal herbs, raspberries, milk and meat. The monastery favored an indisputable and beneficial social development, thanks to the maneuver used in forestry activities and the financing of works of assistance to the poor and the sick. Finally, he promoted a remarkable ecological sensitivity, and thus became a point of honor for the monks, that the plowed plants corresponded to a continuous work of replacement and planting.

DIGA DI RIDRACOLI

Already in the first century the waters of the efuron bidente were used by the Romans for the water needs of the city of Ravenna, through a 50 km aqueduct that left near Meldola. Today, however, is the imposing lot of the Ridracoli dam to collect, from the river Bidente and Rio Celluzze, 33 million cubic meters of water, about half the hydrophobic needs of Romagna, in a narrow valley framed by the green Apennine slopes.

Ridacoli, part of Bagno di Romagna, has one of the most impressive dams in Europe. Built between 1974 and 1982, the dam consists of a huge arched wall, 103 meters and a half in length 432 meters long, thus embanking a charming artificial lake, surrounded by the remaining three sides of the wooded forests of the national park .
The panoramic view of the dam, the experience that becomes even more impressive in the case of water drainage from the underlying rectangular openings, is impressive: an impressive mass of water (600 cubic meters per second) flows through the openings in the Damping basin, forming a waterfall of over 100 meters in height.

Many of the paths that drive from the lake, but the most famous is the one leading to the refuge of Cà di Sopra, 2 km of path on an old mule track that leads to an old stone building dating back to 1777, recently restored. The most enterprising will continue to the Lama forest.

The most hidden and astonishing ravines of the lake are, however, preferable to those who choose to embark on an electric propulsion boat where a professional guide tells the story, anecdotes and curiosities of this small and charming corner of Romagna, where man and nature Have met to give us a unique and unforgettable spectacle.

A more detailed historical, technological and naturalistic picture is provided in the halls and the thematic poles on the dam walk, of the IDRO - Ecomuseum of the Waters of Ridracoli Museum, which at the cost of a few euros illustrates themes such as the relationship between man and water, Bonder Valley fauna, water distribution on the planet, water saving and conscious consumption. Originality and innovation of this exhibition path are witnessed by the nomination at the European Museum Award of the Year, which in 2006 saw this exhibition ranked among the top 18 museums.
